The Raid Review

Published on May 16, 2012 in Featured, Film, Review

Imagine taking 4 shots of espresso, tying a bandana around your head (a tie will suffice) and then running around like a lunatic in a playground. In short – that’s what watching The Raid feels like, and that’s what you’ll be wanting to immediately do after watching this terrific film.   There is a time and place for deep philosophical films, the ones that make you reflect and feel and cry – there is also a time and place for the sort of films that make you want to air punch and go ‘yes! This is amazing!’ The Avengers was a recent film that did that, and similarly, The Raid is such good fun, that to critique a lack of

American Pie: Reunion Review

Published on May 9, 2012 in Film, Review

“Were we just as obnoxious as these kids back in the day?” “Not us, our generation, we were more mature.” So who’s up for another slice of American Pie?   Sure it’s slightly over the ‘best before’ date but hey it’s been 13 years since the original film. For those who haven’t partied with the lovable loser Jim (Jason Biggs), nice but dim Oz (Chris Klein), enigmatic mum-seducing Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas), average bloke Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), and maverick party guy Stifler (Seann William Scott) – the gang are reunited for their 13 yr high school reunion.   So what has life brought for the gang? Well Jim is still married to Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) and they have a little

The Dark Knight Rises Trailer Breakdown.

If there is one thing that the internet film community loves to do, it’s moan. Whether it’s that a wrong actor has been chosen to play a part, or that a trailer looks disappointing – everyone loves to moan before knowing the full story. But if there’s another thing that the film community loves to do, it’s over analyse everything. So. With that in mind, here is the CultureSlap breakdown of the final The Dark Knight Rises trailer. (For our previous trailer breakdown – click here / to watch the trailer – click here) Well – first off. Here is Batman! Good to see that he’s going to be in the film. The trailer kicks off with a few standard

The Dark Knight Rises Final Trailer!

Published on May 1, 2012 in Featured, Film, Preview

Does this really need an introduction? The latest and final trailer for the upcoming superhero film (although we really know it’s not a superhero film as such) The Dark Knight Rises has been released by Warner Bros Pictures. Things kick off with Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) saying, “There’s a storm coming…” And from the trailer it’s fairly self evident that the storm is called Bane (Tom Hardy). From then on it’s a brutal montage of epic destruction, all played out to a haunting tune. With tag lines such as ‘Hope is Lost’ the misery is well and truly piled on here. For internet snarks, there is also a fair amount of Bane dialogue to let us know that we can understand him. What we can also see

Rain Playlist

Rain rain go away, Come again another day. Little Johnny wants to play; Rain, rain, go to Spain, Never show your face again! This morning I woke up to discover that our kitchen roof was leaking and that our floor was covered in a steady stream of water that seemed determined to make its way to other parts of the house. Living in a flat with a flat roof, I spent some of the day trying to sweep puddles off our roof while it was still raining. A foolish task if there ever was one.  Everyone must find a way to save water to help limit the effects of drought, Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman said today following a major summit.

Avengers Assemble Review

Published on April 26, 2012 in Featured, Film, Review

The Avengers may just be the best Superhero film of all time…   Expectations can be a dangerous thing in film. Who can forget the massive hype surrounding Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace that ultimately left everyone feeling like a ten year old getting their heart broken for the first time? (just ask our guest columnist Jamie Cutteridge). The Avengers Assemble (we’ll be dropping the Assemble word thank you very much) is a film and concept, that ever since it was hinted at in 2008, has been completely built on hype. Excitingly this isn’t going to break any hearts. The Avengers is superb. It’s exciting, and most importantly, it’s fun.   Comic fanboys are perhaps some of

Trial Evolutions Review

Published on April 22, 2012 in Featured, Games, Review

Trail Evolutions XBox Live Bursting onto XBLA this week is Trial Evolution, a game that takes the core concept of man and bike versus the world and takes it to whole new heights. For gamers who like their action in quick fire, easy bursts, the idea of negotiating increasingly hard obstacle courses on a bike that requires the delicate touches of a lover, Trials Evolution may not appeal. Which would be a shame as this is without question the best XBLA game of all time.   Building on the rather sadistic qualities of its predecessor, Trials HD, (incidentally one of XBLA’s best sellers) Evolution puts you through the pain barrier on a regular basis. Simple steps become hardcore climbs, and

Irvine Welsh’s Ecstasy Review

Published on April 21, 2012 in Film

Can it really be fifteen years since the awesome Trainspotting put Scotland and drugs on the big screen in a smart, funny and engaging masterpiece based on the ground-breaking novel by Irvine Welsh. Welsh followed up Trainspotting with a load of similar styled (but not as good) novels which included Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance in 1996. Ecstasy tried hard to be a ‘Trainspotting for the E generation’ and now we have the cinematic adaptation of one of its short stories – The Undefeated…  ‘Don’t do drugs’ is the message of a generation and Welsh has fun digs at the oppressive government’s happiness crushing policy but it all feels a bit ‘been there and seen this before.’  “pink hair
